Begun in 1959 as a part-time hobby by Ray and Joyce
Stockslager, Stockslager’s Greenhouse and Garden Center in New Lebanon, Ohio,
has grown from one small glass greenhouse to nearly six acres under cover. Now
into its third generation, the family oversees the production in this year-round
growing facility, sharing their experience and
expertise with retail and wholesale customers alike. In those early years, Stockslager’s was only open during
the spring. During the day Joyce
would plant and take care of the daily jobs. Ray worked for Ohio Bell Telephone,
so in the evening orders were pulled with help from his wife and children.
Deliveries were made the following morning on Ray’s way to work to customers
such as Xenia Avenue Feed, Gentile Produce, and Penske Produce. Slowly,
greenhouses were added as demand for their quality plants increased.

It was in 1978, when Ray retired from Ohio Bell, that he
and his wife decided to make the business a full-time enterprise. Soon, sons
Duke and Scott and daughter-in-law Barb joined the business, and in 2006,
grandson Jacob. Thanks to the hard work of family members and valued employees
over the years, Stockslager’s continues to take pride in reaching its number one
goal:
